New Zealand Travel Guide

Quick answer

New Zealand is an island country with two main islands, known for volcanic lakes, fjords, glaciers and Māori culture. Most visitors from India need a Visitor Visa and fly in through Auckland, usually with one stop. Plan nine to thirteen nights for a relaxed trip across both islands, and use the guide pages below for detail.

FAQs

New Zealand Travel Guide: FAQs

Short answers to what travellers ask about New Zealand.

How many days do I need for New Zealand?

Seven days covers one island well. Ten to fourteen days is better for both islands, with Rotorua, Queenstown and Milford Sound. Trying to fit both islands into a short trip usually means long drives and less time at each stop, so plan fewer, longer stays.

Do Indians need a visa for New Zealand?

Yes, Indian passport holders generally need a New Zealand Visitor Visa before travel. The NZeTA is not normally enough. Read the [visa guide for Indians](/visa/new-zealand-visa-for-indians/) for the documents and fees, and confirm details with Immigration New Zealand before you book.

When is the best time to visit New Zealand?

December to February is warmest, and March to May or September to November suits fewer crowds. June to August is the season for skiing. Each season has trade-offs, so match the month to your priority, whether weather, snow, crowds or cost.

Is New Zealand expensive for Indian tourists?

It can be, because accommodation, car rental, fuel and domestic flights are significant costs. The [trip cost guide](/new-zealand-travel-guide/trip-cost/) explains each cost and how to reduce it, such as travelling in shoulder seasons and choosing apartments.

Can I drive in New Zealand with an Indian licence?

Yes, with a valid Indian licence. An approved English translation or International Driving Permit may be needed. Drivers keep left, and mountain roads take longer than the map suggests, so allow time between stops. Check the rules for your licence, and consider an International Driving Permit if your licence needs one.

Are there direct flights from India to New Zealand?

Current schedules generally show no direct service from India to Auckland. Most routes connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Australia, Hong Kong or the Gulf. See [how to reach New Zealand](/new-zealand-travel-guide/how-to-reach/) for typical routings from each Indian city.

Is New Zealand good for a honeymoon?

Yes. Queenstown, Milford Sound, Lake Tekapo and Rotorua suit scenic honeymoons, and luxury lodges suit couples who want a remote stay. March, April, November and December suit honeymoon plans best. Our [New Zealand Honeymoon 9N](/packages/nz-honeymoon-9n/) is one example.

Which area is a good base for a first visit?

Queenstown is the strongest base for iconic lake and mountain scenery, because it connects to Wānaka, Glenorchy, Te Anau and Milford Sound. Auckland works well as the arrival base for the North Island. Read [places to visit](/new-zealand-travel-guide/places-to-visit/) for the full list.
