Italy has a Mediterranean climate in the south and a cooler, more continental climate in the north and in the mountains. Temperatures and rainfall therefore change by region, not only by month. For most first trips, the shoulder seasons offer a strong combination of pleasant weather, sightseeing comfort and manageable crowds. This guide gives the month-by-month picture, then explains how the season affects the big cities, the coast, the Alps and the budget.
Italy at a glance, month by month
The figures below are typical monthly ranges for Italy's main cities, from our research. Mountain and northern areas are cooler, and the south is usually warmer.
- January: about 3°C to 12°C, with around 65 mm of rain. Cool and relatively quiet, good for cities and museums.
- February: about 4°C to 13°C, with around 55 mm of rain. Cool shoulder season with fewer visitors, and alpine areas stay snowy.
- March: about 7°C to 16°C, with around 65 mm of rain. Good for sightseeing as temperatures rise, though showers are possible.
- April: about 10°C to 19°C, with around 70 mm of rain. Mild and spring-like, an excellent city-break month.
- May: about 14°C to 24°C, with around 55 mm of rain. One of the best months for multi-city tours, lakes and countryside.
- June: about 18°C to 28°C, with around 45 mm of rain. Warm and generally dry, good for coast, islands and outdoor touring.
- July: about 21°C to 31°C, with around 25 mm of rain. Peak summer, hot, crowded and expensive, especially in Rome, Florence and Venice.
- August: about 21°C to 31°C, with around 35 mm of rain. Very busy and hot, and many Italians take holidays, so some businesses close.
- September: about 18°C to 27°C, with around 65 mm of rain. Excellent for cities and coast, with crowds easing after mid-month.
- October: about 14°C to 22°C, with around 95 mm of rain. A strong shoulder-season choice, pleasant early in the month and wetter later.
- November: about 9°C to 16°C, with around 110 mm of rain. Quieter and often cheaper, but wetter; good for museums, food and heritage.
- December: about 5°C to 12°C, with around 85 mm of rain. Cool low season, with Christmas markets and a festive city atmosphere.
When is the best time for the big cities?
Rome, Florence and Venice are busiest in summer, and the Vatican queue can last several hours without an early reservation. Spring and early autumn give a strong balance for walking and sightseeing. Early October is pleasant, while later October and November bring more rain. Avoid the Christmas and New Year peak if you want lower prices, because demand and hotel rates both rise during those weeks.
Why is June or September often better than July?
Travellers commonly regret summer trips, especially June to August, because heat, crowds and long queues make Rome, Florence and Venice tiring. June is warm and generally dry, which suits the coast and islands. September is often the most balanced month, with crowds easing after mid-month and weather still warm enough for coastal days. July and August suit travellers who can plan indoor visits for the middle of the day.
When should you go to the coast and islands?
The Amalfi Coast, Capri and Venice need early reservations from June to September. May, June, September and October suit honeymoons and family trips, because the weather is comfortable and the coast is less crowded. Sea-based plans depend on weather, so keep one flexible day in case ferries are affected. The Italy and Amalfi Coast honeymoon package is planned for these months.
When is the snow season?
The Alps and Dolomites have established ski infrastructure, and December to March is the snow season. The northern lakes can be cold and grey in winter, though the cities are quiet and atmospheric. Snow-focused trips need planning for mountain transport, which differs from the city and coastal routes covered by our standard packages.
Is the low season good value?
January, February and November are often cheaper outside festivals. These months are cooler and wetter, so pack layers and plan museum and food days for rainy periods. Budget travellers can also choose a shoulder month, stay outside the historic centres, use regional trains and eat a larger lunch rather than dinner. See Italy trip cost for more on prices.
How to choose your month
Choose April to June for city breaks and countryside touring, and September or October for coast and cities with fewer crowds. Choose summer only if you can plan around the heat and book every timed entry early. Choose winter if you want lower prices, quieter museums and Christmas markets, and accept cooler weather. Our Italy travel guide and places to visit pages show how each season fits your route.
How was this guide compiled?
This guide is compiled from published tourism, weather and transport information and from traveller reports. It was last checked on 2 November 2026. Monthly temperatures and rainfall are typical ranges, and actual weather varies from year to year.
