Greece is made of very different places, and the right choice depends on how many days you have. A first trip usually starts in Athens, adds one island, and sometimes includes a mainland stop such as Meteora or Delphi. This guide covers seven places that suit different kinds of trip, with notes on what each one offers and how to fit it into a route.
For a first visit, three places cover most of what travellers want: Athens for heritage, Santorini for scenery and sunsets, and Mykonos for beaches and nightlife. Crete is the best fit for travellers who can stay longer, because it is large and rewards more time. Naxos is a good choice for families and independent travellers who want a quieter island.
Athens combines the Acropolis with walkable streets, museums and modern Greek food culture. The Acropolis is the main attraction, and an early morning visit is the most comfortable, because the site gets hot and crowded later in the day. Our planners advise booking a timed entry in advance. Do not schedule the Acropolis straight after an overnight flight, because a rested visit is much more enjoyable.
Plaka is the old neighbourhood below the Acropolis, with narrow streets and tavernas. Monastiraki is a short walk away and busy with shops and markets. The Acropolis Museum is a good afternoon stop after the morning visit. Athens is also the main arrival airport and the usual base for island connections, so one or two nights here are easy to plan.
Santorini is known for its caldera-edge villages, volcanic geology and sunset viewpoints. Fira and Imerovigli are common bases for travellers, because they sit on the cliff edge with views across the caldera. Oia is famous for its sunset, but it is very crowded in the evening, so many travellers prefer to watch from a viewpoint closer to their hotel or from the water.
The island has distinctive black-sand beaches and Red Beach, which is known for its red volcanic cliffs. The caldera walk from Fira towards Oia is a popular activity, though the steps are steep and the cobblestones uneven. Comfortable shoes matter more here than almost anywhere else in Greece.
Mykonos pairs famous beaches and beach clubs with a compact Venetian-era old town. Mykonos Town has narrow lanes, whitewashed houses and the windmills above Little Venice. The beaches range from lively clubs to quieter stretches of sand, so it suits couples, friends and travellers who want nightlife and sea time.
Mykonos is substantially more expensive in July and August. Shoulder-season accommodation can keep the experience at a lower cost, and April to May and September to October are good months to visit. Book dinners and beach areas in advance if you travel in peak season.
Crete is the largest island in this guide. It has beaches, mountain villages, Cretan cuisine and the Minoan palace of Knossos. It also has Samaria Gorge for hikers and Balos Lagoon for a day on the water. Because the road distances are long, our planners treat Crete as a regional destination rather than a day trip. Two bases are usually more efficient than repeated long transfers.
Heraklion is the usual starting point for Knossos, and Chania is a good base for the western part of the island. A village visit or a cooking class is a good way to see local life on Crete beyond the beaches.
Meteora is one of the most unusual sights in Greece. Dramatic sandstone pillars support historic Orthodox monasteries, which can be reached by road and steps. A rushed day trip from Athens is tiring, so a stay overnight in Kalambaka or Kastraki is a better way to see the monasteries and viewpoints. Check the monastery opening times before you plan, because they change by day.
Delphi sits on a mountainside and was the sanctuary of Apollo, an important religious and political centre in ancient Greece. The archaeological site and museum explain its role clearly. Delphi works best as a mainland stop, combined with Arachova or an overnight on the mainland, rather than squeezed between island flights.
Naxos has broad sandy beaches, traditional villages, local cheese and a more relaxed pace than Mykonos. It suits families and independent travellers who want to explore inland villages. A vehicle makes the island much easier to see, so allow time and transport for the villages rather than treating Naxos as a quick photo stop.
Start with the number of days. Seven days suits Athens plus Santorini or Mykonos, or Athens plus one island with a day trip. Ten to fourteen days allows Athens, one or two islands and a mainland stop. Fewer bases make for a calmer trip, because island changes take a travel day each. If you want beaches, pick one island with a long stay. If you want heritage, add Meteora or Delphi. FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about Greece (Santorini).
Athens, Santorini and Mykonos are the most common choices for a first trip. Athens covers the Acropolis and heritage, Santorini covers caldera views and sunsets, and Mykonos covers beaches. Add Meteora or Delphi if you want mainland heritage.
Plan at least seven days for Athens and Santorini together. Two nights in Athens give time for the Acropolis and the museums, and three nights on Santorini allow the caldera walk, a boat trip and a relaxed beach day.
They suit different travellers. Santorini is known for caldera views, villages and volcanic beaches. Mykonos is known for its beaches, nightlife and old town. Many travellers visit one and then the other on the same trip.
Yes. An early morning visit is the most comfortable, because the site is cooler and less crowded. Book a timed entry in advance, and avoid scheduling the visit straight after an overnight flight.
Naxos and Crete are good choices for families. Naxos has broad sandy beaches and traditional villages, and Crete offers beaches, mountain villages and archaeological sites. Choose one large island rather than several small ones.
A day trip is possible but tiring. An overnight stay in Kalambaka or Kastraki gives you time for the monasteries and viewpoints, and it is easier to plan around opening times.
Four days is a minimum for Crete, and more time suits a longer trip. Our planners recommend two bases, such as Heraklion and Chania, because road distances make repeated transfers long and tiring.
Delphi is usually better as a mainland stop, combined with Arachova or an overnight stay. Adding it between island flights makes the trip rushed, so plan it as a separate part of your journey.
