France (Paris) travel guide

France Trip Cost

Quick answer

A France trip costs more in Paris and on the Riviera than in regional towns. Hotel area and category, trip length, season, rail travel and attraction tickets drive the total. Our packages are land-only, so flights and the Schengen visa fee are extra. Compare quotes by checking what is included, not only the starting price.

Ask what a France trip costs and the honest answer is that it depends on a few clear choices. Where you stay, how long you travel, when you go and which experiences you book all change the total. France is moderate to expensive compared with many European destinations, and Paris and the Riviera cost more than regional towns. This guide explains the drivers, so you can read a quote and see where the money goes.

What drives the cost?

Several cost drivers shape a France trip. Here they are roughly in order of impact:

  • International airfare: the largest single cost for most travellers from India. Our packages leave flights out.
  • Hotel demand: Paris and Côte d'Azur hotels cost more, especially in peak months.
  • Schengen visa and service charges: the visa fee and any service charge are separate from the package.
  • Trains: TGV and other intercity fares vary widely, and advance booking usually lowers the cost.
  • Private transfers and guided sightseeing: a private driver or guide adds to the total, but saves time.
  • Timed-entry attractions: Louvre, Versailles, Eiffel Tower and château tickets are extra unless listed.
  • Wine, dining and private experiences: wine tours, well-known restaurants and private tastings add up quickly.

Accommodation: areas and categories

Hotel choice is the biggest lever you control. In Paris, budget stays are found in the 10th to 15th arrondissements and Montmartre, while the Eiffel Tower and Invalides area, the Opéra area and the Trocadéro and Champs-Élysées area cost more. In Nice, the station area is budget-friendly, while the Centre and the Promenade des Anglais cost more. Bordeaux has budget options near the Saint-Jean station and standard options in the historic centre.

Most standard and budget stays are booked with breakfast only. Luxury palace and château hotels can add dining supplements, so ask whether your quote covers them. Our packages use comfort-category hotels on twin sharing, with daily breakfast.

Getting around costs

Urban public transport is good value. A single Metro or city fare is about €2 to €3, and many travellers use a multi-day pass. Taxis and ride-hailing are costly in Paris, so most visitors use the Metro and RER. Intercity travel depends on the route and the timing of your booking. Book long-distance SNCF trains ahead to lower the fare, and plan your route so you avoid repeated long transfers. For more detail, see how to reach France.

Attractions and experiences

Major attractions use timed entry, and prices vary by site and ticket type. Budget for the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Versailles and any château you visit. Guided tours, private transfers, cooking classes and wine tastings are optional and change the total. If you want a Disneyland Paris day, check whether the ticket is in your quote, because theme-park entry is a separate cost in most itineraries.

Season and trip length

Season has a clear effect. July, August and major school holidays bring the highest hotel rates and the busiest attractions. Spring and autumn offer better value without sacrificing weather, and winter offers the lowest rates outside the festive dates. Trip length matters too. Each extra region adds nights, rail legs and transfers. Seven nights suits Paris plus one region, and each extra night adds to the total.

Visa and insurance costs

The Schengen visa has a fee and possible service charges, which vary with the application route. Travel insurance is listed among the documents for the visa, so you should budget for it. Neither is included in our packages, though visa assistance is. Check the official France-Visas information for current charges before you pay. See the France visa guide for Indians.

How to compare quotes

When two quotes look different, compare what sits behind the number:

  • Hotel area, star category and meal basis.
  • Airport transfers, sightseeing and whether a private vehicle is used.
  • Rail tickets, including the Paris to Nice train if you visit the Riviera.
  • Timed-entry tickets for the Louvre, Versailles and the Eiffel Tower.
  • Visa assistance, and whether the visa fee is listed separately.
  • Whether GST is included, and what is extra.

Ask for a written quote that lists each inclusion, and confirm that flights are booked separately.

Our France packages

Each package shows a starting price as an estimate, twin sharing, excluding GST, and lists its inclusions and exclusions. Paris Romance 4N is a four-night Paris trip with a Seine dinner cruise and Eiffel Tower timed entry. Paris with Disneyland 5N is built for families, with one Disneyland Paris day. Paris & Nice Côte d'Azur 7N splits the stay between Paris and the Riviera. Compare them on the France tour packages page.

FAQs

France Trip Cost: FAQs

Short answers to what travellers ask about France (Paris).

What is the biggest cost on a France trip?

For most Indian travellers, international airfare is the largest single cost, and our packages do not include it. After flights, hotel area and star category have the most effect. Trip length and season come next.

Is France cheaper outside Paris?

Often, yes. Regional towns and public transport can be more affordable than central Paris or the Riviera. Smaller cities also tend to have lower hotel rates. Paris still needs a few days, so plan regional stays around it.

Is the Schengen visa fee included in your package?

No. Visa assistance is included, but the Schengen visa fee and any service charges are paid separately. Check the official France-Visas information for current charges before you pay, since they can change. Ask your planner for the current fee and any service charges, so you can budget the full cost.

How much does public transport cost in France?

Urban fares are modest, about €2 to €3 for a single trip in cities. Metro passes help for multi-day sightseeing. Intercity fares vary by route, and advance booking usually lowers the cost compared with booking on the day.

Are Versailles and Louvre tickets included in packages?

Only where the itinerary says so. Packages show the timed entries they include, such as the Eiffel Tower in some packages and Versailles palace entry in others. Other attraction tickets are extra, so check the inclusions list in your quote.

Why is the Riviera more expensive than other parts of France?

Peak-season demand is high in Nice, Cannes and Monaco, and hotels near the seafront cost more. Summer crowds push rates up further. Choosing a station-area hotel in Nice and using trains for day trips can reduce costs.

Do travel insurance and visa costs add to the package price?

Yes. Travel insurance is listed among the documents for the Schengen visa, and it is extra in our packages. Budget for both separately, and check the official visa channel for the current fee and any service charges.

How can I keep a France trip within budget?

Travel in shoulder months, book trains and timed entries early, use the Metro in cities, and choose hotel areas just outside the busiest districts. Ask for a quote that lists every inclusion, so you can compare options on the same basis.
