Azerbaijan has hot summers, cold winters and two mild shoulder seasons. Baku sits on the Caspian coast, where wind is a feature of many months, and the mountains of the Caucasus are colder than the capital. The right month depends on what you want to do: city walking, Gobustan's open landscapes, mountain scenery or a quiet winter break. This guide sets out the months in order, so you can compare them against your dates.
April to May and September to October offer the most comfortable conditions for Baku, the Old City, Gobustan and the Absheron Peninsula. Temperatures are mild enough for long walks, rain is light, and most day trips are pleasant. These are the most balanced touring periods, and they also suit travellers who want a Gabala or Sheki extension.
July and August are the hottest months in Baku, with highs around 32°C and very little rain. The heat makes midday sightseeing hard, so start early and rest through the afternoon. The shoulder months are cooler and still dry in May and September, and they give longer outdoor days without the peak heat. If your trip is in summer, plan the Old City and Gobustan for early morning, and use the evenings for the waterfront.
Winter is cold, windy and quieter, with highs of about 8°C to 9°C in Baku from December to February. It suits travellers who enjoy museums, indoor sightseeing and warm dinners. Mountain snow activities in Gabala and Shahdag run mainly from December to March, but snow conditions and lift operations change with the weather, so do not plan on snow outside the season. Travellers sometimes find December colder than they expect, though some report enjoying Baku in the last week of the year.
Gobustan is more comfortable in the cooler months, when the open landscape is easier to walk in daylight. Gabala's cable car can pause in high winds, which can occur in any season, so keep a lowland option. Sheki and Quba suit May, June and September, when temperatures are mild to warm. Winter suits city breaks, while the Caspian coast and resort areas are livelier in August.
Yes. Baku hotel rates can rise during international events, and April to May and September to October are the most balanced touring periods, so demand can be steady. November, February and early March are generally among the cheaper times to visit, excluding ski-focused stays. Summer prices vary by hotel and area. Book Baku accommodation early for the shoulder months and for any major event, and ask your planner which dates the quote covers. See Azerbaijan trip cost for how season and inclusions change the price.
Pack for wind and for changeable weather, even in summer. Bring a light layer for the evenings in April and October, and warm layers for December to February. Check the forecast a week before you travel, because mud-volcano access and cable-car operations depend on the weather. Confirm opening dates for seasonal attractions before you book, since travellers report missing some seasonal experiences when they visit outside the opening season.
