Australia and Great Barrier Reef 12N is a twelve-night trip built around the reef. Three nights in Sydney cover the harbour and the Blue Mountains. Six nights in Cairns make one base for the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest and Kuranda, so you are not packing and unpacking for each trip. It suits couples, nature lovers and adventure travellers who want a reef experience and a strong city finish.
Days one to three are in Sydney, with the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, the Manly ferry and a Blue Mountains day. You fly to Cairns on day four, then spend six nights exploring the tropical north. The reef day cruise sits on day six, with a weather buffer on day seven in case a departure is delayed. The Daintree and Kuranda fill days eight and nine.
Day ten is a flight to Melbourne, where you spend three nights in the laneways, arts districts and museums. Every transfer on the ground is by private vehicle, with breakfast daily and visa assistance included. International and domestic flights, scenic flights, the visa fee, insurance and other meals are not included.
Your trip expert can stretch, shorten or swap any day.
Land at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport and transfer to your hotel in the Sydney CBD by private vehicle. Check in and rest after the long journey. In the evening, walk along Circular Quay to see the Opera House and Harbour Bridge lit up. Keep the first night light before the sightseeing starts.
Spend the day on Sydney Harbour. Walk around the Opera House and take in the views of the Harbour Bridge from Circular Quay. Take the ferry to Manly for a harbour crossing and a walk on the beach. Return to the city in the late afternoon for a relaxed dinner by the water.
Travel by private vehicle to the Blue Mountains, a few hours from Sydney depending on traffic. Walk one of the valley trails and enjoy the viewpoints over the eucalyptus forest. Carry water and sun protection, and keep the walks to a comfortable pace. Return to Sydney for the evening.
Transfer to Sydney airport for your domestic flight to Cairns, which is booked separately. On arrival, transfer by private vehicle to your hotel on the Cairns Esplanade. Spend the afternoon by the water and attend the reef briefing with your planner. The tropical north is warm, so keep the day at an easy pace.
Spend a relaxed morning on the Esplanade and its lagoon. Pack a dry bag, sun protection and any reef gear your operator asks for. Your planner confirms the reef departure time for the next day. In the afternoon, rest at the hotel or visit the local markets.
Board your reef day cruise from Cairns by private vehicle transfer. Snorkel or join a guided reef activity, depending on what the operator offers that day. Reef departures can be delayed or cancelled by sea conditions, so the buffer day in this itinerary may be used for the reef instead. Return to Cairns in the late afternoon.
This day is held as a buffer. If the reef cruise ran on the previous day, use it for a free Cairns day or an optional scenic flight over the reef, quoted separately. If the cruise was delayed or cancelled, rebook it for this day, with your planner handling the operator change. Keep the evening free.
Take a full-day guided trip to the Daintree Rainforest by private vehicle. Walk the rainforest tracks with a local guide, and look for the wildlife and the river views. Carry insect repellent, water and shoes suitable for muddy tracks. Return to Cairns in the evening, when the day has been long and rewarding.
Travel to Kuranda, a village in the rainforest hills above Cairns, for a relaxed day of markets, cafés and short forest walks. Keep the day unhurried, and allow time for the return journey. The village is cooler than the coast, so carry a light layer. Return to Cairns for the evening.
Transfer to Cairns airport for your domestic flight to Melbourne, which is booked separately. On arrival, transfer to your hotel in the Melbourne CBD by private vehicle. Spend the late afternoon exploring the central streets and a laneway café. The weather is cooler here, so pack a jacket.
Explore the laneway culture of central Melbourne, with its cafés, galleries and street art. Visit the Royal Exhibition Building, a UNESCO-listed heritage site, and one of the city's arts or museum districts. Keep the afternoon free for shopping or rest, since the city is easy to explore on foot.
Use the day at your own pace. Visit Southbank, the food districts or a museum of your choice, or rest in the hotel. If you want to see the Great Ocean Road, ask your planner for a quote, but plan it as an overnight route rather than a rushed day trip.
Enjoy breakfast and check out of your hotel. Your driver takes you to Melbourne airport for your departure, leaving enough time for check-in and security. If your flight is later in the day, use the morning for a last walk through the laneways.

May to October is the best window for the Great Barrier Reef, as the north is drier. Travellers often prefer the mild shoulder months for Sydney and Melbourne. December to February is the wet and busy season in the tropical north.
