About this trip

Bhutan Family 5N covers western Bhutan at a gentle pace: two nights in Thimphu, one in Punakha and two in Paro. It suits families who want a safe, culturally rich trip without rushing through the valleys. Travellers often say Bhutan feels peaceful for children, but the pace and the hikes need adapting.

You see Tashichho Dzong, the craft markets and Buddha Dordenma in Thimphu, cross Dochula Pass and visit Punakha Dzong. In Paro, a full day is kept for Tiger's Nest, with the hike optional. Our Bhutan travel guide explains the route, and the places to visit in Bhutan page covers each stop.

Everything on the ground moves by private SUV with driver, with breakfast and dinner daily, airport transfers and visa and entry permit assistance included. Flights, lunches, entry fees not listed and travel insurance are extra. Indian nationals need no visa, but an entry permit and a nightly fee apply. See the Bhutan visa guide for Indians.

  • Thimphu's Tashichho Dzong, craft markets and Buddha Dordenma
  • Dochula Pass on the drive to Punakha
  • Punakha Dzong beside the river
  • A full day set aside for Tiger's Nest, with the hike optional
  • A relaxed pace with a driver who can adjust each day

Day-by-day itinerary

Your trip expert can stretch, shorten or swap any day.

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Paro and drive to Thimphu

Land at Paro International Airport and meet your driver. The drive to Thimphu is about 50 km and normally takes one to one and a half hours, depending on traffic and weather. Check in and rest. Keep the first evening light, because the altitude and the journey can tire children.

    DinnerNight in Thimphu
  2. Day 2: Thimphu sightseeing

Spend the day in Bhutan's capital. Visit Tashichho Dzong, browse the craft markets and see Buddha Dordenma. Your driver groups the sights by area, so you avoid repeated cross-town driving. Plan breaks for snacks and rest, and ask for shorter stops if the children are restless.

    Breakfast, DinnerNight in Thimphu
  3. Day 3: Dochula Pass and Punakha

Drive from Thimphu over Dochula Pass, known for its memorial chortens and Himalayan views, although cloud can hide the panorama. Continue to Punakha, check in and rest. This is a longer road day, so travel with snacks and let your driver stop where the children need a break.

    Breakfast, DinnerNight in Punakha
  4. Day 4: Punakha Dzong and the return to Paro

Visit Punakha Dzong beside the river, the former seat of government and one of Bhutan's most photogenic fortresses. After the visit, drive back toward Paro. Road journeys between the valleys take substantial time, so we plan an unhurried start and a flexible finish. Check in and rest.

    Breakfast, DinnerNight in Paro
  5. Day 5: Tiger's Nest, at your family's pace

Tiger's Nest is a demanding hike and not compulsory for young children. Hike as far as your family wishes, or spend the day on gentler sightseeing in the Paro valley instead. We keep this day free of other plans, so altitude, weather and energy decide what you do.

    Breakfast, DinnerNight in Paro
  6. Day 6: Departure from Paro

Enjoy breakfast and check out. Your driver takes you to Paro International Airport for departure. Paro flights are weather-sensitive, so do not book a tight onward connection on the same day. Allow plenty of time for check-in.

Good to know

  • Indian nationals need no visa, but an entry permit and the nightly Sustainable Development Fee apply. Your written quote states how the fee is handled.

  • Children aged 6 to under 12 pay a reduced rate for the nightly fee, and children under 6 are exempt.

  • Road journeys between valleys take substantial time. Keep driving days short for young children and carry snacks.

  • Tiger's Nest is a demanding hike. Do not make it compulsory for young children, and avoid doing it on arrival day.

  • Pack warm layers. Evenings are cold in most months, and the valleys are colder in winter.

  • Breakfast and dinner at the hotel are included. Lunches are extra.

  • Flights are not included and are booked separately. Paro flights are weather-sensitive, so leave a buffer before any onward connection.

  • Confirm family rooms in advance. Your planner arranges this when you share the children's ages.

FAQs

Bhutan Family 5N: FAQs

What travellers ask about this trip. Your trip expert can answer anything else.

Is Bhutan suitable for a family holiday?

Yes. Bhutan is generally considered safe and culturally welcoming. Families say it works well when the pace and hikes are adapted. Keep road days short, confirm family rooms and do not make Tiger's Nest compulsory for young children.

Is Tiger's Nest too hard for children?

It is a demanding hike, so it suits older, fit children. This package keeps a full day free for it. Hike as far as your family is comfortable, or choose gentler sightseeing in the Paro valley instead.

What does the Bhutan Family package include?

Five nights in comfort-category hotels on twin sharing, breakfast and dinner daily, private airport transfers, sightseeing by private SUV with driver, and visa and entry permit assistance. Flights, lunches, unlisted entry fees and insurance are not included.

Do Indian families need a visa for Bhutan?

No visa is needed, but Indian nationals must get an entry permit with a valid passport or voter ID. A nightly Sustainable Development Fee also applies. Children aged 6 to under 12 pay less, and under 6 are exempt.

Does the package include flights to Paro?

No. Our packages are land-only, so flights are booked separately. Paro is served from Delhi and Kolkata by direct flights, and from other cities usually through a connection. Our planners can suggest sensible timings.

When is the best time to take this package?

March to May and October to November are generally best for clear views and comfortable weather. April and October suit families well. Avoid the monsoon from June to August, when landslides and road delays are more likely.
